Enjoying a swim through 90’s and 00’s Gaultier for no reason other than delight. I needed a bit of fashion relief. But also the inspiration of camp with a kind of elusive precision and confidence that calms a restless messy creative mind. Every piece is heavy with reference, and questions, and fun. Not a shred of fear. So much shape and scale.

I came here for some help. Currently fashion is doing one of those clawing wanders about the corners of it’s own repetition. Doing lots of decades recaps. It’s one of those time where only the most worrisome trends will do (the rest are already taken by the past). I’m old enough now to worry about things coming back (insert bucket hats). Platforms are the Rococo wren in the mall that tells us we’re digging in the bin. Gaultier didn’t seem to worry about that, ignoring any preconception of the past to find something beautiful (or at least well thought). How is he so good at doing wrong stuff? Is this tacky? If so, it’s lost on me.

I recommend digging around here or in some of his costume design. Or here, which is heaven. Tip: avoid some of Olivier Rousteing’s work currently coming from the house. It’s clever but annoying and feels a bit like they are just selling perfume. Tip tip: I can’t promise anything but if you treat his stuff like art or whatever you might not spiral too far into wealth distribution rage. Can’t promise a thing tho, I usually end up there myself after a scroll or two.
